Chobihige (ちょびひげ) is one of the recurring characters of Natsume's Book of Friends series. He went to the Fujiwara residence to consult Takashi about a matter that concerns human beings. After spending time with Takashi and the others, he became one of the members of the Dog's Circle.

Appearance

With an unbalanced body measure, his head is almost as tall as his body. Because of this particular characteristic, his facial features are very large in size with a small mustache decorating his face and a mole between his eyebrows. He wears a traditional green kimono and wraps it with a red obi belt.

In the Chapter 108 of the manga, he revealed his true, magnificent appearance in the form of a beautiful, white dragon. Although his characteristics are pretty similar to the dragon familiars of Hakozaki, he maintains his notable mustache which is much longer in length compared to his usual form. Takashi also stated that his dragon scales are remarkably stunning and other spirits even regarded them as a sign of good luck during their shedding season.

Personality

Not much was truly known about Chobihige aside from the fact that he seems to act politely towards humans and can even ask for their help if the matter concerns their kind. However, being a dragon in nature, he regards himself as high and mighty and views other creatures as lowly and pitiful. Despite of his complex personality, he likes to drink with the other middle-class spirits, particularly the Dog's Circle, as he frequently appears at Takashi's house for a drinking session.

History

In the past, Chobihige once found a beautiful shell around a seashore and made it a comb for his mustache. He treasured it deeply for a long time and became a little depressed after it broke apart.

Plot

After a mysterious circle made him visible to human eyes, Chobihige desired to consult a human and chose Takashi as the most suited for the task. Since he is quite powerful, despite of Nyanko-Sensei's sacred barrier around the house, he managed to barge in and requested for the child of man's help. After telling Takashi his concerns about a girl drawing youkai circles everywhere, he pulled him up and dragged him to the latter's location. There, they witnessed the girl, who later introduced herself as Taki, drawing a circle and learned her reason for tracing them on the road. Chobihige later became concerned about the Takashi's wellbeing and decided to stay by his side after the child of man got injured by the youkai that cursed Taki. Thankfully, with the help of Nyanko-sensei, they managed to seal the evil youkai through an evil-sealing mirror and finally freed themselves from the curse. He was later seen having a friendly argument with Nyanko-sensei which made Takashi exhausted and Taki curious about what they are saying.

Following the event that caused Nyanko-sensei to suffer from a cursed arrow, Chobihige and the rest of the Dog's Circle decided to visit the Fujiwara residence to check up on him. However, this particular visit eventually turned into their usual drinking session after the Chuukyu brought a sake and offered it to Hinoe. This party greatly fatigued both Takashi and Nyanko-sensei and made the child of man incredibly sleepy on his trip with Shigeru.

With Nyanko-sensei still recovering from his injuries, Takashi was left alone to protect himself from evil youkais. Chobihige and the others visited the Fujiwara residence once again and coincidentally saved Takashi from a certain youkai upon their arrival. However, they decided to have a good time while protecting the duo and enjoyed themselves all night, leaving the child of man exhausted once more.

With the Demon Moon coming around, Chobihige and the rest of the Dog's Circle went to the Fujiwara residence to invite Takashi to their planned drinking session. Since the sake will become especially tasty on that particular day, they decided to have a part to honor the child of man by forming the Natsume's Dog Club. Moreover, aside from the fact that the moon will emanate demonic light, Chobihige mentioned that the stars will also surprisingly align well on that day, so these delicious sake will become several times better than usual.

Takashi tried to cheer him up by giving him a sparkling dragon shell which he struggled to obtain. Unbeknownst to him, the shell came from Chobihige himself which made the youkai to ask if he truly considers it beautiful. Seeing the effort of Takashi and the Dog's Circle, he made a new comb out of it before transforming into a stunning, white dragon. He told everyone that he will keep it forever and cherish it longer than his first shell comb.
